Boing boing’s Xeni Jardin has posted a long article today that points to a number of current sources.

Rather than repeat them here, you should view her post.

Sources indicate that hundreds may be dead and a thousand or more detained or jailed.

The Dalai Lama has (again) indicated he will resign his post as head of the Tibetan government in exile if violence continues. (This being in conflict with his wish for a continued nonviolent approach to Tibetan self-determination.) His Holiness has already stated that he considers himself to be “semi-retired” in that most of his responsibilities in terms of secular government have already been turned over to elected representatives. So such a move would be consistent with his professed plan to retire*. The question is whether it would improve the situation in Tibet.

*Retirement would, of course, only be from secular government, allowing His Holiness to pursue a life dedicated to study, meditation, and teaching.

“Since 2002, a little-known academic ritual has taken place each year at Harvard University. Academics of every stripe, from historians to constitutional lawyers, gather to discuss Tibet’s past, present and future. Uniquely, these intellectual debates have brought together Chinese and exiled Tibetan scholars. In the real world, the simplest facts about Tibet are so divisive that dialogue is impossible. Chinese speak of the 1950 peaceful liberation of the Chinese province of Tibet, and of its subsequent modernization; Tibetans speak of the invasion of an independent nation, and the suppression of its religious and cultural traditions. “

This short online article reviews many recent happenings, including the Dalai Lama’s options on reincarnation, in light of annual discussions that have been going on without much fanfare. Worth reading.

“Not one government official met one of the world’s best-known personalities either at the airport or at his prayer sessions and meetings where he confined speeches to spirituality….

“Thanks to the official aloofness, most Japanese were not even aware of the spiritual leader’s presence in their country…

“But there was another reason for the indifference. The Japanese government under Fukuda is strenuously trying to mend relations with China, soured during the tenure of Fukuda’s predecessors Shinzo Abe and, before him, Junichiro Koizumi…”

Emory University, in Atlanta, Georgia, has appointed the Dalai Lama as a distinguished professor. And he has begun professing! But how to address him? “Professor Dalai Lama?” “Doctor Lama?” – well of course, he is still addressed as “Your Holiness.” But what does this professorship mean?

And I wonder if he’ll have a regular faculty web page.

The professor arrived in Atlanta yesterday to begin a whirlwind round of panels, discussions and lectures.

Though there’s nothing new about teaching for the Dalai Lama. He routinely teaches for between 2 and 5 days, and full days at that – none of this one-hour-class-three-times-a-week stuff for His Holiness the Dalai Lama. It’s an extremely important part of the “lama” role. One to which he is particularly dedicated.

So when he agreed to be a “Presidential Distinguished Professor” at Emory, it was not in the least unusual in terms of what he does from day to day, while still being unique since this is an actual teaching position – not just an honorary appointment.

Spiritual Leaders Call for Understanding, The Washington Post – At Emory University, Dalai Lama Says Tolerance Is ‘Essential’ in Today’s World – By Dorie Turner “ATLANTA, Oct. 21 — The Dalai Lama and other spiritual leaders called Sunday for followers of the world’s religions to work toward understanding each other rather than bickering over differences.

The panel, which included Rajmohan Gandhi, the grandson of Mohandas Gandhi, stressed affection for others, even if they have differing views on faith.

There’s no avoiding this week’s news – the (US) Congressional Gold Medal was awarded to the Dalai Lama in Washington DC on Wednesday the 17th of October.

The event was webcast by ICT, and we hope that the entire video will eventually be available, but it isn’t yet. However, ICT has made available the Dalai Lama’s acceptance speech and photos taken in the Capitol rotunda.

Here’s our own note: Watching the webcast was moving – the very direct words – aimed at the Chinese government – were unexpected and welcome. The medal is given by the Congress (the legislative branch of government, not the executive), yet George W. Bush attended the event and played an important part. Throughout the various introductions ran the theme of His Holiness’ committment to non-violence, but also his own view was echoed – that the native Tibetan population and culture are doomed unless action is taken, and very soon.
